So much for vacation brain ... My question tonight is: WTF is going on in the world when the most sweeping financial regulations since my grandparents were babies just passed Congress, an oil spill still is being mitigated, we're fighting two wars, and the headlines are about Sarah Palin's kid???
There aren't enough swear words even in my rather expansive lexicon for that.
Inspired by the media blitzkreig of Bristol Palin's engagement to her baby-daddy, I am writing a list of things and people about which I do not care. And I mean, I do not care about these things and people at all. No, I do not care that you do not care about whether or not I care about these things. (Yeah... I don't know what I just wrote, either.) Truth be told, I am outraged, and that's why I issue forth this list. I do not wish to raise my children in a world in which more people know who Paris-Skanky-Ho-Hilton is than who their Congressman is. It's disgusting, and it's shameful, and we must demand better from our media and from our educators; especially, we must demand better coverage of issues that impact our children's future, things like changes in education (did you know some school systems in California just had their school year shortened because of budget shortfalls?), agriculture (how have almost half a million dairy farmers gone out of business?), war (what the hell is going on with those?) etc. I'm tired of having to dig too deep on these interwebs trying to find answers that I don't even know are true. Truth is all relative, right?
So here's what I know to be true: my sh*t list. Please append to this list in comments if you wish. Let's kick things off with the people (and their TV shows) about which I do not care:
- Sarah Palin or any of her progeny, or their progeny
- Lindsay Lohan
- Paris Hilton
- Mel Gibson or his wife
- The Osbournes
- Tiger Woods or any of the nasty skanks he screwed, or the details of his divorce settlement
- Kate Gosselin's hair, her self, her progeny, or her ex-husband
- Those people with 19 children
- Any "Real Housewives"
- The Jersey Shore
- Any other reality television personalities
- Any TV show that has anything to do with vampires or ghosts (I got over that at, like, age 12)
- Pretty much any movie or TV star, with rare exceptions, as you've probably already surmised
- Anybody who makes a living just by being famous
- Hillary Clinton (it's not that she's in the news or anything, I just never liked her)
- Al Gore and his divorce details
- John Edwards and his divorce details
- Gay-bashers, Muslim-haters or any other kind of bigot
- People who insist that Obama isn't American
- Wall Street bashing by those who have no idea how this country's financial system actually works
- Horrorcore
- Blowhards
- Arrogance
- Envy
- Grudges
- Liars
- Whiners
- Judgment
- Fear
- People who fake food allergies in a misguided attempt at weight loss
- People who are rude to service people, especially restaurant waitstaff
- When people answer their phone and have a long conversation during a scheduled meeting (even if it's just two moms sharing coffee, it's rude!)
- Road rage
- Ear grommets
- Blogs that are funded by swag-pimping
- Anybody who makes my kids cry (doctors and nurses excepted; coaches aren't)
- The focus on the professionalization of childhood
- Ayelet Waldman's commentaries on motherhood
- Extremism
- Humidity
- The Big Lebowski (I fell asleep each of the seven times I tried to watch it...)
- Drama (no, not theater -- the kind of drama people manufacture to make themselves feel important)
- Gardening
- Fashion that hurts
- Cleaning
I'm sure that this list could grow and grow, and karma is probably angry with me for not balancing the negative with the positive. Oh, but I will, I will ... and fortunately, the list of things about which I care is much, much longer. But tonight: FTW, get that BS about Bristol Palin's engagement off of the news and move on to things that matter!
[end rant]
