Along the same theme as my last post on how to live a good life, I'm attempting some serious goal-setting via a bucket list. Inspired by Maggie Mason (aka Mighty Girl), I've decided to start a list of things that I hope to do before I'm too old (or too dead) to enjoy them.
Please share: what's on your bucket list?
Here are my first 38 things to do (since I'm 38 years old), in no special order:
- Drop into a halfpipe. (Disclaimer: I have learned to snowoboard, but I can barely connect my turns -- so this halfpipe goal is kind of a big deal.)
- Ride a wave on a surfboard.
- Learn to sail.
- Drive the Road to Hana, Maui.
- Visit Italy (all of it, but especially Rome and Lake Como).
- Visit Norway (and the rest of Scandinavia too, why not?!).
- Tour Australia from Sydney to Perth.
- See the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- Drink coffee in Seattle, Washington, USA.
- Visit Costa Rica.
- Tour parts of the British Isles I haven't seen: Wales; Scotland; Ireland.
- Go on Safari in Kenya and/or Tanzania.
- Take my daughter to Tokyo, Japan.
- Spend a year in Provence, France (though I'd settle for a week).
- Gamble in Monte Carlo.
- Take my son fishing in Alaska.
- Visit the Hawaiian Islands I've not yet visited: Maui, Molokai, Kauai and the Big Island.
- Savor a romantic bungalow vacation in the Seychelles.
- Hike part of the Appalachian trail with my kids, camping along the way.
- Take my daughter to NYC for a mom-daughter week alone to take in at least 5 Broadway shows together.
- Take my son to see the Yankees in spring training in Tampa.
- Take my family on an RV trip to see the Grand Canyon.
- See the green flash.
- See the Northern Lights.
- See the Midnight Sun.
- Visit every Mission in California with my family.
- Attend the Sundance Film Festival.
- Experience Burning Man.
- Live in an oceanfront abode.
- Publish a novel.
- Take singing lessons.
- Obtain a motorcycle license and a Vespa.
- Give a talk at TED. (This presumes I've done something worthy of talking about at TED...)
- Make photo baby books for my kids.
- Re-read the Great Books.
- Compete consistently at a 4.0 level in tennis.
- Learn to make a variety of chocolate truffles.
- Ring in my 70th birthday by sittting on a park bench in Central Park with my beloved. (You know: "Can you imagine us years from today, sharing a park bench quietly? How terribly strange to be 70." - Simon & Garfunkel)
